New van for Canterbury Food Bank
Canterbury Food Bank has a much-needed van, thanks to generous donations from local Rotary Clubs, Canterbury Cathedral and Barretts. Whitstable Non Ecclesiastical Trust has also helped with van insurance and running costs for the first year.
Jarle Tatt of The Rotary Club of Canterbury Sunrise says: “The Santa Street Collection by members of the Rotary Club of Canterbury Sunrise in December 2013 raised enough money to 50% fund the purchase of a van for Canterbury Food Bank. Canterbury residents dug deep into their pockets and also donated many tins of food and Christmas goodies for this worthy and topical cause.”
The remaining funding was provided by Canterbury Cathedral, which donated £5,000, and The Rotary Club of Canterbury. Paul Barrett made a suitable van available and has committed to continued support for Canterbury Food Bank – a perfect example of businesses and voluntary organisations working together for the benefit of the local community.
Canterbury Food Bank Director Chrissie Barr says: “We are extremely grateful to these local organisations for their support and generous financial contributions. The van is now in regular use, providing emergency supplies for local people in crisis who can exchange food vouchers for food parcels via our distribution cafes in Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay. We have been able to help over 300 families in the first three months of this year alone and given out over £16,000 of food.”
The Rotary Club of Canterbury Sunrise has confirmed that the 2014 Rotary Santa Street Collection in Canterbury will once again raise funds for Canterbury Food Bank.
The Rotary Club of Canterbury Sunrise enjoys an excellent relationship with Canterbury Cathedral, hosting their weekly meetings at the Cathedral Lodge on Wednesdays, 7.15am – 8.15am and only last September holding their spectacularly successful C.E.O. SleepOut in the Cathedral grounds. Anyone interested in finding out more about the good work of Rotary should contact their club secretary, Nick Rennie at firstname.lastname@example.org
